The Holy Ramayan is a Hindu Epic that narrates the life and teaching of the Lord Rama. Its recitation and study form a core aspect of Hindu spiritual practice in Trinidad. The Indian indentured laborers arrived in Trinidad and the Caribbean from India between 1845 and 1917 to work on the sugar plantations. Coming mainly from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Gujerat, Bhojpur, Calcutta and Madras they brought with them their religion, food, clothing, music and festivals. They also brought a rich cultural and religious heritage, including the Ramayan which they would recite in their homes and temples and at Community Satsanghs and Ramayan Yagyas. In Trinidad, Ramayan Satsanghs and Hanuman Chalisa Chanting are well loved and are popular amongst the Hindu Community. During the Navratri festival the events of the Ramayan are colourfully enacted with appropriate props, costumes, music and dance at the Ram Leela Festival over a period of nine days in open air theatrical presentations. It is commonly held at public parks in various communities in the country and attended by thousands of Hindus and non-Hindus alike with appropriate Bhajans, music and tassa drumming.
